Right now, on the line of shampoos and hair care products, sulfate free shampoos are gaining popularity for giving more benefits for your hair. There are those who actively endorse its use and of course those who claim that they are relatively safe.

Sulfates like the Sodium Laurel Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Lauryl Ether or most commonly known as Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) are surfactants which in simplest term mean they act as detergent which helps shampoos to lather well. They are the most common ingredients in most commercial shampoos available, bathing soaps, detergents, and other cleaning products because they had been proven as effective cleaners and that on the manufacturing side, are very affordable. If this is so, then why should we opt for sulfate free shampoos?

There are a lot of issues with regards to sulfates as a shampoo ingredient. Some of them are as listed:

  • Most people claim that using products containing sulfate aggravate acne conditions and that it causes the skin to become dry. It causes the skin to be more penetrable, in fact, it is use during allergy test for this purpose. In other words, other harmful products which may be in the cosmetics you use or other stuffs you apply in your skin will be absorbed more readily by the skin.
  • Most studies prove that sulfates have something to do with cancer. If your research even further, it is actually a main component of most herbicides and pesticides. Although most marketers will claim that it has been tested and proven as safe to use as a cosmetic product especially because it is just used in small quantities. Still, it doesn’t hurt to err in the side of caution.
  • They are not helpful for color-treated hair. Sulfates don’t make your hair color last long. They wash away the pigmentation as they work mainly as cleanser.
  • Some tests (especially those that were done in Germany) showed that sulfates causes hair loss or thinning.

Non sulfate shampoo is mostly derive from organic ingredients and contains natural alternatives like babassu nut as a foaming ingredient to disperse other ingredient in place of SLS and SLES.
